Population, Size, Growth and Density

Based on survey report of National Census and Statistics Office (NCSO), the municipality of Naujan registered a total population of 83,892 with an average annual growth rate of 2%.

With the land area of 528 sq. km., and a population of 83,892 the density is 1.6 persons/hectare. The most densely populated areas were those located nearest to the center while the barangays of District 8 posted the least population concentration.

Sex Distribution

As per year 2000 Data Evaluation Report from NSO, males outnumbered females. There are 43,322 males and 40,156 females. The sex ratio is 108 males from every 100 females.

Households and Household Size

Total household size throughout the municipality as of 2000 is 16,923. Considering the total population of 83,892 based on National Statistics Office Data, average household size is 4.95.

Health, Nutrition and Sanitation

Health Status Indicators

Sanitation data shows that as of 2004 there are 11,185 households with access to safe water while there are 10,808 households with sanitary toilets.

As to incidence of malnutrition among pre-schoolers it is common to all barangay. The highest percentages were those in the indigenous barangays of Magtibay and Paitan which is 34.61 and 24.0 respectively.

Health service delivery within the municipality is provided by two RHUs. RHU East served 27 barangays while RHU West served 43 barangays. The large area and difficult terrains poses problem on accessibility especially in the upland and coastal areas. There were times that bad weather conditions isolate some of the barangay, making health service provision impossible during certain periods.

Education, Culture and Sports

In Naujan, DepEd has three districts namely: East, West and South which has adopted two major thrusts: quality and excellence and access.

As of the latest NSO survey, 73% of the population was literate. In terms of educational status, some 93% of the population over seven years old had some form of schooling although only 2.3% earned an economic degree. An estimated 31 percent graduated from elementary and around 20% finished secondary education.

Naujan has a total of 75 schools offering elementary and secondary education. There is a shortage in the number of secondary schools which forces students to seek higher education in other areas thereby making it more unaffordable for some of the households. Consequently, an inadequate secondary school facility causes overcrowding in existing schools. There is a tertiary education facility in the municipality.

As to sports and recreation facilities, there are 78 community basketball courts spread over 64 barangays while there were 18 children’s playgrounds servicing eight district.

Housing and Resettlement

Single-detached houses were prevalent with 94.3% of all dwelling units classified under this type. Most of the dwelling units were owned by its residents. However, there are cases that dwelling owners did not own the land on which they built their houses.

Social Welfare and Development

Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office has been mandated to care, protect, rehabilitate and empower the socially, economically and physically disadvantaged sectors in the municipality. To be able to carry out its mandate and objectives, the MSWDO implements the following programs and services: Marriage Counseling Service, Assistance to Individual in Crisis Situation, Day Care Service, Women Welfare Program, Senior Citizens Program, Self-Employment Assistance Program and Emergency Shelter Assistance.
